Non Luogo
by Leonardo Pierro
The heterotopia of the non-place.
According to the French sociologist Michel Foucault, who coined the definition heterotopia, the term non- place means: "Of all these places, the ones that interest me most have the curious
property of being in relation with all the other places, but in a way that allows them to suspend, neutralize and reverse the set of relationships that are outlined, reflected and mirrored by themselves". Why not think of the
non-place then as a suspended dimension in which many actors, events, needs, intersect without ever really mixing? The non-place could therefore represent a sort of middle ground: it welcomes the traveler in the moment of loss
but in the long run reifies the identity essence of humanity by sacrificing it on the altar of globalization.
